The lodge is awesome - great food and staff!
Hike the rim trail for truly spectacular views of mountains, cliffs, unusual rock formations, alpine lakes and meadows. Meet the occasional mountain goat. Top up your water bottle from snowpacks.Read up on hiking safety, and you need to be somewhat fit (not super fit). It's exhilarating and well worth the effort to get there.
My wife and I visited Cathedral lakes with a couple friends mid August. The weather was beautiful (chilly at night though). We hiked the Rim trail on one day, and a day at ladyslipper lake for fishing. Both days were awesome. Rim trail has a lot of unique rock features and great views of the different lakes. Fishing ladyslipper was a blast, we caught wild mountain rainbow trout in the 12-18inch range, beautiful fish. Highly recommend 3-4 nights to try a few different activities.
So beautiful and relaxing there
Not sure how long this place will exist. With something like 80% of the trees dead from beetles and larv, the desert setting and a wilful ignorance of physics by all those who discarded cigarettes around the camp enjoy it whilst you can. The scenery is drop dead gorgeous and varied, hikes range from simple to strenuous and you get the best trimmings of car camping without the yobs with subwoofers.
